The Politics of Climate Change

Everyone can agree that climate change is a big issue. And big issues require big, global solutions. Worldwide, many plans are being made to stop climate change, a big one being The Paris Agreement.

The Paris agreement is an agreement created to limit climate change, and it was signed by 196 countries in 2019. This agreement has sparked gargantuan, wide spread, systemic alterations. The Paris agreement means to limit climate change as much as possible, and has had countries make fundamental changes in their policies.

Although the Paris agreement is helping the world as a whole, many countries are also individually working to stop climate change. One example is Estonia. Estonia is a small country in northern Europe, next to Russia, and it is very vulnerable to climate change due to being on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Because of this, the citizens of Estonia have a very high expectation for their government to tackle climate change. In 2022, Estonia beat its previous target of using 40% renewable energy, and is now working on the ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Another example is Israel, which committed to reducing its greenhouse gasses by 27%. One of Israel’s most notable efforts is the use of wind energy. One wind farm in Israel powers roughly 70,000 homes. As well, solar energy makes up much of its energy use. Most of Israel’s houses have solar panels and use solar energy. In fact, Israel produces 6.5% of its total energy through solar.

Canada has been committed to its efforts in reducing climate change. These efforts include restoring wetlands, the controversial Carbon Pricing policy, and investing into programs that guides people to use cleaner energy. The Energuides program aims to educate people about how they can be better at reducing Canadian carbon emissions. Overall Canada has been creating many paths for dealing with climate change. However Canada’s oil and gas industry has caused Canada to be ranked “Insufficient” by climate websites such as Climate Action Tracker

However, some countries aren’t doing well with fighting climate change. One country that isn’t doing so well is China. China’s economy has been expanding for decades due to its current industries which leave a large environmental impact.

For the first time in history almost all countries came together to stop a crisis. This crisis is known as climate change. The global stage has shined on climate change and this has caused more unity than any other agreement. The Paris agreement strives to limit climate change. This marks a turning point in global action against climate change.
