Have you ever heard of the fluffy cousin of the raccoon that was mentioned in the movie Turning Red? I bet you are thinking about the red panda. Red pandas are very cute and fluffy animals that live in Asia. There are two species of red pandas, Chinese red pandas and Himalayan red pandas. Like most animals, these two species of red pandas have scientific names, Ailurus fulgens fulgens and Ailurus fulgens styani. Now, let’s take a deep dive into the red panda.
Red pandas can be found in places like Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China. They can also be found in zoos like the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and The Detroit Zoo. When at a zoo, they tend to be calm and lazy. They like to climb trees and get fed their biscuits and fruits. They look like cuddly, fluffy dogs that love to climb trees. They sure look like a great pet, if only they didn’t have claws.
Next, I want to talk about their appearance. If you look at a red panda you might describe their appearance in different ways. A few ways I like to describe them are fluffy and cute. Their fur is so fluffy and helps them stay warm when the weather isn’t great. They also have long, bushy tails that help them climb trees. Their claws help them grip onto things which also helps them climb trees and other surroundings. They have large, round heads and short snouts with big, fluffy, pointed ears. Their faces are white with reddish-brown “tear” marks that extend from the eyes to the corner of the mouth. According to the National Zoo, these markings may have evolved to help keep the sun out of their eyes. They are small animals but they are the best. The average size of a red panda is about the length of 20-25 inches long with a tail about 11-19 inches long. On average, they weigh around 6-14 pounds.
Red pandas are the only living members of the Ailuridae family, and their classification position has been a big scientific debate, whether they are a part of their own family or are a part of the raccoon or bear families. In 1825, they were first described as members of the raccoon family (Procyonidae) which was a controversial classification because of their ecological characteristics and appearance of the head, dentition, and ringed tail. In future years, scientists assigned the red panda to the Ursidae family, also known as the bear family. However, most recent genetic research places red pandas in their own independent family, Ailuridae. Molecular phylogenetic studies show that red pandas are an ancient species in the order Carnivora and are most likely closely related to the family that includes skunks, raccoons and weasels.
Red pandas mark their territories by scent, using their anal glands and urine, as well as scent glands located between their footpads. These scent glands are located on the bottom of the red panda’s feet and create a colourless liquid that is odorless to humans. Like mentioned before, red pandas are also skilled climbers, using trees for shelter, to escape predators. Their ankles are extremely flexible, and the fibula and tibia (bones in the leg) are attached in such a way as to allow the fibula to rotate about its axis. These features make it possible for red pandas to climb head first down tree trunks really well.
Sadly, red pandas are endangered. There are less than 10,000 red pandas and possibly as few as 2,500. This is really sad. However, there are multiple organizations that are trying to solve this issue. One example of an organization that is saving red pandas is The Red Panda Network. You can donate money which will help this organization save red pandas. I wish red pandas were not endangered because they are my favourite animals. If I could have one as a pet, I would definitely want one.
To wrap things up, I think red pandas are amazing animals. They are unique animals that are very fluffy and cute. Although they are endangered, we can do something about it. We can donate money to help save them as well as not disrupt their habitat and themselves. Red pandas are unique animals as they are the only species in the Ailuridae family. They are most likely related to skunks, raccoons, and weasels. I love them because they are so fluffy, cute, and look cuddly. When in a zoo, they are very calm which is what I would want as a pet. They are amazing climbers which helps them stay away from predators. In conclusion, I strongly believe that red pandas are the cutest and best animals on earth.
